Overview

Lucy: A Novel, published in 1990, is a coming-of-age story by Antiguan-American writer Jamaica Kincaid. It follows the eponymous protagonist as she leaves her home in the West Indies to work as an au pair in the United States. Through Lucy’s observations and reflections, Kincaid explores themes of identity, race, and gender. Lucy: A Novel is Kincaid’s second novel, following her 1985 debut, Annie John. Her work often draws on her own experiences growing up in Antigua and moving to America.
