Overview

James Joyce’s “A Little Cloud” relays the story of Thomas Chandler, nicknamed “Little Chandler,” who lives an uneventful life in Dublin. He is stuck in an unwanted marriage and he has never lived up to his potential. Little Chandler’s insecurities come to a head when he meets an old friend for a drink who is living an adventurous life the likes off which Little Chandler can only dream of. “A Little Cloud” is part of Joyce’s Dubliners, a collection of fifteen short stories set in Dublin, which was first published in 1914. “A Little Cloud” and the fourteen other short stories offer a realistic depiction of what life was like for the Irish middle-class in the early 20th century.
