Overview

James Joyce’s “An Encounter” tells the story of a young boy who dreams of adventure in the American Wild West. Eager to find an adventure of his own, he concocts a plan with some of his fellow schoolboys to skip school and explore Dublin. “An Encounter” is part of Joyce’s Dubliners, a collection of 15 short stories set in Dublin, which was first published in 1914. “An Encounter” and the 14 other short stories offer a realistic depiction of what life was like for the Irish middle class in the early 20th century.
