Overview

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “MS. Found in a Bottle” was first published in the weekly periodical the Baltimore Saturday Visiter in 1833. Poe submitted the story to a writing contest held by the Visiter, whose editors unanimously selected it as the winner, earning Poe a $50 cash prize. The story tells of a sailor’s harrowing journey, written as if it were a message found in a bottle. Once a skeptic, the sailor begins to doubt science’s ability to unravel the mysteries of the world when he is stranded on a mysterious ghost ship by a storm of almost supernatural power.
