Overview

James Joyce’s “The Boarding House” is a contemplation of marriage, gender roles, social pressures, and family dynamics. It tells the story of Mrs. Mooney, a woman who intervenes to salvage her daughter’s reputation when her daughter begins a relationship with one of the boarders. “The Boarding House” is part of Joyce’s Dubliners, a collection of fifteen short stories set in Dublin, which was first published in 1914. “A Boarding House” and the fourteen other short stories offer a realistic depiction of what life was like for the Irish middle class in the early 20th century.
