Overview

“The Body” is a novella by Stephen King originally published in his 1982 collection of short fiction, Different Seasons. It follows the story of twelve-year-old Gordie Lachance and his friends as they search for the dead body of a missing boy. Instead of centering on supernatural horror like many classic King works, “The Body” explores the more mundane horrors of abusive families, bullies, and the lack of opportunities in a small Maine factory town. Bruce A. Evans and Raynold Gideon later adapted the novella into the screenplay for Rob Reiner’s classic 1986 movie Stand by Me.
