Overview

Anton Chekhov’s “The Lady with the Dog” tells the story of Dmitri Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna, who are both trapped in unhappy marriages. The pair meets by chance while they are both vacationing in Yalta, and they fall in love while having an affair. The text is an exploration of second chances, mortality, and the transformative power of love. Published in 1899, “The Lady with the Dog” is one of Chekhov’s most famous pieces of short fiction, and author Vladimir Nabokov regarded it as one of the best short stories ever written.
