Overview

James Joyce’s “Two Gallants” is an exploration of poverty, gender, and betrayal. It follows Lenehan and his friend Corley, who have hatched a plot to convince a maid Corley is dating to steal from her employer. “Two Gallants” is part of Joyce’s Dubliners, a collection of 15 short stories set in Dublin, which was first published in 1914. “Two Gallants” and the 14 other short stories offer a realistic depiction of what life was like for the Irish middle class in the early 20th century.
