Overview

Rhinoceros is a play by Romanian-French playwright Eugène Ionesco that was first performed in 1959. The play is a commentary on the rise of fascism and the dangers of conformity. It tells the story of a small French town where the residents begin turning into rhinoceroses one by one. As the play progresses, Bérenger, the protagonist, becomes increasingly isolated and struggles to hold onto his own identity. The play is often interpreted as an allegory for the spread of fascism in Europe in the 1930s and 1940s.
