Overview

The Seagull is a play by Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov that was first performed in 1896. The play is set on a country estate and explores the romantic and artistic conflicts between a group of characters, including the famous actress Irina Arkadina, her lover Boris Trigorin, and her son Konstantin Treplev. The Seagull is considered one of Chekhov’s four major plays and is often interpreted as a meta-theatrical commentary on the nature of art and the artist.
