. In Alam’s short novel, a family’s vacation in a remote Long Island rental home is disrupted when the owners of the house arrive seeking shelter from a blackout in New York City. With all electronic communication cut off and a disaster of a global scale threatening them, the two families are forced together, bringing issues of race and class into focus against a backdrop of fear and uncertainty.
