Overview

Sounder, a young adult novel by William Armstrong, was first published in 1969. The novel revolves around a Black sharecropper’s family and their loyal dog, Sounder, living in the American South during the 19th century. When the father is imprisoned for stealing food to feed his starving family, Sounder’s loyalty and the boy’s quest for education become symbols of hope amid adversity. The narrative explores themes of racial injustice, poverty, and the enduring strength of familial bonds. Sounder was adapted into a well-regarded movie starring Cicely Tyson, Paul Winfield, and Kevin Hooks in 1972.
