Overview

Das Kapital—or in English, Capital—was written by German philosopher, economist, and political revolutionary Karl Marx. Marx published the first volume, parts of which are the focus on this guide, in 1867. After Marx’s death, his friend and collaborator Friedrich Engels publish a second volume in 1885 and a third volume in 1894. This SparkNote guide focuses on one component of Das Kapital: Marx’s schema of how the capitalist system functions. It offers coverage of Section 1 of Chapter 1 and of Chapters 4, 6, 7, 10, and 14 from the first volume of Das Kapital.
