Overview

“Cathedral” is the title story from American author Raymond Carver’s short story collection Cathedral, which was published in 1983. “Cathedral” is perhaps Carver’s most famous story and is often anthologized. It tells the story of a blind man who visits the narrator and his wife, and the profound effect that visit has on the narrator. The collection, which explores themes of isolation, communication, and the possibility of redemption, was a finalist for the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
