In this guide, we will discuss the ways cells communicate with each other. Cell communication is important because it allows cells to respond to their environment and coordinate actions. Processes that are supported by cell communication include maintaining homeostasis, regulating cell growth and division, planning apoptosis, responding to pathogens, and sending nerve signals. In essence, cell communication is essential for life as a multicellular organism. Communication occurs by sharing molecules and ions between cells. We will introduce you to several mechanisms by which cells exchange information, including both direct cell-to-cell contact and longer distance chemical signaling. These signals are then converted into actions via signal transduction which we will discuss in the next section.
