Setting (Time & Place): Southern California and various “alternative universes”

Foreshadowing: Alpha Waymond is excited to find bagels and cream cheese in the conference room where they hide from Jobu Tupaki and her agents. Later, Jobu reveals that her secret weapon, a black hole that threatens to destroy the multiverse, takes the form of an “everything” bagel.

Major Conflict: Evelyn Wang faces a number of personal and professional struggles when her ordinary life is upended by a visitor from a parallel universe who believes that she holds the key to saving the multi-verse from a powerful, villainous being.

Rising Action: Evelyn has strained relationships with both her husband Waymond, who has attempted to serve her with divorce papers, and her daughter Joy, who wants Evelyn to acknowledge her relationship with another woman. Additionally, her business, a laundromat, is being audited by the IRS. Amid these problems, she discovers that she is being hunted by a powerful being from a parallel universe. Evelyn learns to “verse jump” between universes, gaining the skills and experiences of alternate versions of herself in order to defeat Jobu, an alternate version of Joy who has been corrupted by her experiences jumping between infinite universes.

Climax: Jobu reveals that she has created a powerful, universe-destroying black-hole-like object, the Everything Bagel, because she feels that life has no true meaning of life. Evelyn becomes, like Jobu, extremely powerful as a result of her own verse-jumping, and the two cannot defeat each other. Though Evelyn almost submits to Jobu’s nihilistic attitude, she is inspired by the loving attitude of Waymond and stops Jobu from entering the Everything Bagel.

Falling Action: Simultaneously, Evelyn saves Jobu from the Everything Bagel and restores her relationship to Joy, declaring that she would rather be there, with her daughter, than anywhere else in the multiverse. As the various Evelyns in alternative universes resolve their own issues and conflicts, Evelyn accepts Joy’s relationship with Becky and, finally, begins to resolve her financial issues with the IRS.
