Overview

Jordan Peele’s blockbuster directorial debut Get Out (2017) is a psychological horror-thriller that employs a surreal, terrifying situation to deliver powerful social commentary about pervasiveness of racism in America. The movie was praised for its sharp social critique, innovative cinematography and sound design, and its masterful use of suspense. It arguably redefined modern horror, earning widespread critical acclaim, one Academy Award, and three further Oscar nominations in 2018. The movie follows Chris Washington (played by Daniel Kaluuya), a young Black photographer who’s visiting his white girlfriend Rose Armitage’s family for the first time. While her wealthy parents seem welcoming, their overly performative attempts at acceptance—and the eerie behavior of their silent Black housekeeper and groundskeeper—unsettle Chris. As the weekend unfolds, it becomes clear that beneath the surface of this suburban garden party, something far more sinister is happening. Get Out explores the history of racial exploitation in America as it illuminates how systemic oppression can take many insidious forms.
