The Godfather, a trilogy of American crime films directed by Francis Ford Coppola, follows the lives and trials of the Corleones, a fictional Italian American organized crime family
. Based on Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel of the same name, The Godfather offers a critical but nuanced look at the mafia through its portrayal of family patriarch Vito Corleone, played by Robert De Niro, and his successor and son, Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino. The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, released in 1972 and 1974 respectively, are frequently ranked among the greatest films of all time, and both received Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The Godfather Part III, released in 1990, received a more mixed response from critics and audiences, who noted its departure, in tone and quality, from the earlier films in the trilogy.
