Overview
Parasite (2019), directed by Bong Joon Ho, follows the impoverished Kim family, who live in a cramped semi-basement apartment in Seoul
. When the son, Ki-woo, fakes his credentials to become the English tutor for the wealthy Park family’s daughter, the Kims devise a plan to infiltrate the Park household. One by one, they replace the Parks’ staff—housekeeper, driver, art therapist—each posing as a highly qualified professional. The Kims begin to enjoy the comforts of their new roles, until they uncover a hidden bunker beneath the Park residence, triggering a chain of increasingly violent events. Tensions come to a head during the Park family's lavish birthday party, where class conflict explodes into chaos. A darkly comedic social satire, Parasite explores themes of inequality, aspiration, and the invisible boundaries that separate the rich from the poor. The movie received widespread acclaim for its sharp storytelling, direction, and social critique, earning the Palme d'Or and four Academy Awards in 2020, including Best Picture.
