Setting: Modern-day Seoul, South Korea; the story takes place over several weeks in the Park mansion and the Kim basement apartment. 

Foreshadowing: The film’s early references to working class lives unfolding underground, and to the need for people to perform social roles, subtly foreshadow both the collapse of the Kims’ plan and the later reveal of Geun-sae hiding in the bunker beneath the Parks’ home. 

Major Conflict: The Kim family infiltrates the wealthy Park household by taking on false identities, but their deception begins to unravel when they discover they aren’t the only people keeping secrets. In addition to deceiving the Parks, they’re also forced to face off with the Parks’ former housekeeper and her fugitive husband, who has been hiding in a secret bunker in the Parks’ basement.  

Rising Action: The Kims settle into their roles in the Park home, but the peace is rapidly disturbed when Moon-gwang (the Parks’ former housekeeper) returns, revealing a secret basement bunker where her husband Geun-sae has been hiding from debt collectors. 

Climax: A violent outburst by Geun-sae during a garden birthday party leads to multiple bloody deaths in the Park and Kim families. 

Falling Action: Ki-woo recovers from his injuries and realizes that his father is now hiding in the bunker that formerly housed Geun-sae. He imagines earning enough money to buy the Park house and reunite with him, but this is an unachievable dream.
