Overview

The main objective of this AP® United States History Period 9 guide is to discuss the challenges the United States faces as it enters the twenty-first century. Politically, the conservative movement that grew as a critical reaction to the Great Society and the civil rights movement became more dominant. The Cold War heated up and then was resolved with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Different foreign policy challenges in developing areas of the world, especially the Middle East, took precedence. New immigrant groups changed both the demography and conversation around immigration in American life. Meanwhile, technology helped create a stronger sense of connectivity, supercharging globalization in the process.
