Overview

A Bend in the River is a 1979 novel by Trinidadian author V. S. Naipaul. The novel follows the life of Salim, an Indian Muslim merchant, as he moves to an unnamed African country to take over his family’s store. When Salim’s life is upended by political turmoil and violence, he is forced to confront the complexities of identity, power, and morality. A Bend in the River was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1979. Naipaul was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001.
