Even before she was forced against her will to transform into a faerie, Nesta had a difficult relationship with her sister, Feyre, as well as their father. Sharp-tongued and bitterly cynical, Nesta typically responds to any attempt to befriend her with barbed insults. Still, she shows a deep concern for her younger sister, Elain, especially after Elain is traumatized by their experiences in the Cauldron. In Velaris, Nesta guards Elain like a watchdog while dismissing all others, including the members of Rhysand’s Inner Circle. Throughout the novel, however, Nesta’s icy demeanor slowly begins to melt as she heals from her own trauma.

She develops a grudging respect for Amren, who seems to understand Nesta’s feelings better than others. When Feyre risks her life to save Elain after Elain is kidnapped by the Cauldron, Nesta surprises Feyre with a hug, tearfully expressing her gratitude, to Feyre’s surprise. Perhaps the most significant factor in Nesta’s development is Cassian, who is her “mate.” Though she pushes him away at first, rudely insulting him when he attempts to get close to her, she slowly begins to open up to Cassian. Feyre observes that, while Cassian leads Rhysand’s armies in battle, Nesta is unable to conceal her deep feelings of concern for him. It is through her growing feelings for Cassian, her love for her sisters, and her increased awareness of the stakes of the conflict that Nesta is drawn out of her shell.
