Evicted by sociologist and author Matthew Desmond is a nonfiction book published in 2016 with the subtitle Poverty and Profit in the American City
. It describes Desmond’s sociological fieldwork in Milwaukee, focusing specifically on poor families experiencing eviction. He lives among and interviews tenants and landlords in several different poor neighborhoods, including a predominantly white trailer park on the city’s South Side and several predominantly Black neighborhoods on the North Side. Desmond follows eight families as they are repeatedly evicted and must attempt to find places to live and ways to generate income.
