The Canary-Colored Caravan of Death, as Bechdel describes the way every member of her family retreated into their different creative pursuits, which provided both a mode of expression for the Bechdels and isolated them from each other. The illustration that accompanies this observation shows the Bechdel home with each of the five family members, silhouetted in individual inset panels that overlay the house, engaged in their own pursuits, each alone and absorbed. This image is so central to Fun Home that it is often depicted on the cover of the memoir, an image of the family’s estrangement. They are all under one roof but siloed into their own individual spaces, as represented by the thick boundary lines that encompass each of them.
