Judyta, August 1975: Day One

Judy stands outside the house, examining tire tracks that look like a car sped away toward Route 29. She suspects the car belongs to John Paul, but as a junior investigator, she cannot officially consider him a person of interest without Hayes’s approval. Inside Self-Reliance, she interviews the wealthy guests, describing them as detached and self-indulgent. Among them is Marnie McClellan, John Paul’s sister, who describes Barbara as unhappy, rebellious, and difficult. Marnie confirms with Judy that John Paul is not directly related to the Van Laars but is considered family since their father, John Paul McLellan Sr., is the Van Laar’s lawyer. Since the Van Laars no longer have a son, John Paul Jr. will take over the bank one day. Marnie confirms she hasn’t seen John Paul or her mother that day.

Suspicious, Judy contacts the station and alerts officers to be on the lookout for John Paul’s blue Trans Am. As she steps outside, she sees a ranger and Tracy, wrapped in a towel from shock. The ranger is looking for someone from the BCI to speak with Tracy, and Judy quickly accepts.

Tracy, August 1975: Day One

Tracy sits across from Judy and describes an unknown figure who led her out of the woods—a person with gray hair, possibly a man. The figure did not speak and only waved her toward safety. When Judy asks why she was in the woods, Tracy hesitates but eventually confesses that Barbara had been sneaking out every night to the observer’s cabin on Hunt Mountain and she wanted to look for her on her own. Tracy admits she doesn’t know much about Barbara’s boyfriend but assumes Barbara’s parents were strict, particularly Barbara’s father. When asked if anything had recently upset Barbara, Tracy shares Barbara’s frustration over her bedroom being painted pink.

Judyta, August 1975: Day One

Twenty minutes after speaking with Tracy, Judy watches her as she reunites with her father and his girlfriend. Standing outside Barbara’s pink bedroom, Judy debates opening the door but is interrupted by Hayes. He informs her that Captain LaRochelle has arrived to lead a briefing at the Director’s Cabin, and he encourages her to speak up in the meeting to share her intel. The command post has been relocated from the Great Hall to the Director’s Cabin, forcing T.J. to temporarily live in the Staff Quarters.

In the meeting, LaRochelle declares John Paul McClellan Jr. and Louise Donnadieu as persons of interest. He also confirms that they have not found any evidence of an unknown figure in the woods. Frustrated by the lack of progress, he assigns investigators to key locations, including Barbara’s school and her family’s Albany home. When Judy mentions the observer’s cabin and Barbara’s distress over her repainted walls, LaRochelle takes immediate action and dispatches a ranger to investigate.

Goldman, an older investigator, raises the possibility of Jacob “Slitter” Suiter being involved. The suggestion shifts the mood of the briefing, but LaRochelle dismisses this suspicion as unlikely, explaining that Slitter is prone to violence and would not have simply guided Tracy back to camp. The comment leaves the investigator discouraged, but LaRochelle does not entirely rule out the theory.

Judyta, August 1975: Day One

Judy and Hayes head back to Ray Brook post, and on the drive, he asks why she became a police officer. Nervous about revealing personal details, Judy initially considers a professional response but ultimately admits that she was inspired by The Mod Squad. Hayes laughs, saying it’s the most original answer he’s heard.

Their conversation is interrupted by a radio call—John Paul McClellan and his blue Trans Am have been spotted and detained. Without hesitation, Hayes and Judy turn around and head to the scene.

Upon arrival, they find John Paul handcuffed, visibly drunk, and sitting on the grass. Searching his car, Hayes discovers cocaine residue, beer cans, and a roach clip, leading to his immediate arrest. The situation takes a darker turn when they open his trunk and find a bloodstained Camp Emerson uniform. Hayes’s face goes pale, and in the tense silence, he asks John Paul outright if he killed Barbara. John Paul invokes his right against self-incrimination, a response that further unsettles Judy. At the station, John Paul is processed quickly and calls his father, the lawyer.
