Summary: Chapters 61–69

Chapter 61

When Avery tells Libby that she plans on staying home from school, Libby quickly accepts her reasoning and decides to spend the day with her. Avery invites her to come along as she searches for a Davenport, which she learns is a specific type of desk. They explore the house, going from room to room, but fail to find a Davenport desk. Avery and Libby run into Skye in the spa, and Oren’s insistence that her masseuse will not be allowed on the estate leads her to reveal the story of the shooting to Libby.

Chapter 62

Not knowing what Skye is referring to, Libby demands answers from Avery and Oren. She becomes extremely angry when she learns the truth about the threat to her sister’s life despite Avery’s attempts to reassure her. This conflict expands to include Drake’s continual texts, and Libby emphasizes that she does not want a new phone because their dad would no longer have her number. She reveals that he recently called her, leading Avery to emphasize that he only wants money. Avery asks Libby if she let Drake onto the estate, and after denying doing so, Libby emphasizes her role as Avery’s legal guardian and storms off.

Chapter 63

Determined to keep searching for the desk, Avery asks Oren to show her to the different libraries in the house. She is unsuccessful and heads downstairs, coming across a large room with a piano. Nan is there listening to the music, and Nash comes in as Avery talks to her. She insists on knowing what his intentions are with Libby while he returns the question about Jameson. Brushing it off, Avery asks Nash if he knows anything about a Davenport desk.

Chapter 64

Nash leads Avery to Toby’s wing of the house, a series of rooms blocked off ever since his death. After breaking in, Nash gives Avery a tour, and she is in awe of how many different types of games are present in each room. She maintains her focus on finding the desk, however, and Nash eventually shows her a game room with a fire pole and a slide which lead to a library on the floor above them.

Chapter 65

Oren climbs up the pole that leads to the library and returns to tell Avery the coast is clear. He also casually mentions her injury, a detail which catches Nash’s attention and inspires him to “ask [his] people” about it. Avery makes her way up to the library, which is full of children’s books, and notices a crack between two of the bookshelves. She pulls on one shelf to reveal a secret passageway, and she excitedly heads down the spiral staircase inside only to discover Grayson and the Davenport desk at the bottom. He explains that he was waiting for Jameson to arrive as they are now certain the game is about them. Avery mentions that she told Nash about the shooting, and Grayson asks to see her wound. They then return to discussing the puzzle at hand, each revealing that they have two of the four numbers. Avery searches the desk and finds a secret compartment that holds a keychain in the shape of the number one.

Chapter 66

That night, Avery struggles to fall asleep as her mind races about the clues and the fear she feels in the wake of the shooting. She dreams that her mom tells her she has a secret about the day she was born. Alisa wakes her up in the morning, and despite Avery’s protests, insists that she must prepare for a charity benefit event that evening. In addition to dress shopping, Avery has to attend media training.

Chapter 67

When Avery gets in the car to head to the dress boutique, she finds Thea is there as well. Thea insists that they need to talk about Rebecca and asks Avery what she did to her to make her cry all night after Avery visited Wayback Cottage, but Avery has no response. They continue bickering as Oren pulls the car up to the boutique, and they are immediately surrounded by paparazzi. Thea suggests that Avery wear green while Avery insists on something with a higher neckline to hide her stitches.

Chapter 68

Once Avery has a dress, the group begins the drive back to Hawthorne House. Thea insists that she participated in the outing because Emily would have wanted her to. As they talk, Oren begins swerving, and Avery sees another vehicle coming at them. The other car tries to run them off the road but eventually spins out and is surrounded by the police. Having once again feared for her life, Avery is furious when Alisa and Oren reveal that the entire outing was planned in order to invite an attack. Oren argues that this was the best method they could use to gain more information on the gunman. He then goes on to reveal that initial reports from the police indicate that Drake was the driver who hit them, and he explains that they will need to interview Libby.

Chapter 69

The police take a statement from Avery about the shooting, Drake, and Libby before she returns to Hawthorne House. Once there, Nash storms up to them almost immediately demanding to know why the police escorted Libby out. He reveals that Drake has been texting her and that Libby had been feeling guilty. Avery interrupts the argument between Alisa and Nash to demand that someone from the Hawthornes’ law firm be sent to defend Libby. Despite being desperate to be alone, a media consultant is waiting to meet with Avery.
