Louis and Armand had a deep, truthful conversation about Lestat and the events in Paris. Louis told Armand about his recent encounter with Lestat, and said he might never leave New Orleans again. Armand asked if Louis felt hatred toward Lestat or a desire for revenge, but Louis explained that Lestat was dying and clinging to life out of fear; his death would be slow and difficult, like a human’s. When Armand asked Louis about his feelings for Lestat,  Louis insisted he felt nothing.

Feeling brave, Louis bluntly asked if it was Armand who locked Claudia out in the sun, causing her death. Armand’s silence and pained expression answered the question for him. He expressed regret for not preventing her death, but Louis accused him of being indifferent. Louis became cold and distant, and shared that he could never love or embrace the same darkness that Armand possessed. All of his feelings for Armand were gone.

Armand walked away, and Louis never saw him again. Days later, he noticed Armand’s unused coffin and moved it beside his family’s grave, then broke it apart. Not long after, one of Lestat’s newly-turned vampires sought guidance from Louis, but Louis threatened to kill him if they  ever met again. Later, Louis left New Orleans in pursuit of something unfamiliar and new because he felt that nothing else mattered anymore.
