Overview

Bonnie Garmus’s 2021 novel Lessons in Chemistry centers on brilliant chemist Elizabeth Zott, who finds herself simultaneously hosting a science-focused TV cooking show, learning how to be a single mother, and struggling with grief. Garmus uses this unique premise to explore the gender biases of American society in the 1960s, the transformative power of education, and the many ways families can form. The book has recently been adapted into a television series by Apple+, and was named Barnes and Noble’s “Book of the Year” in 2022.
