Overview

On Freedom, by author and historian Timothy Snyder, is a nonfiction book published in 2024. Snyder describes the book as a catalog of positive goals that America can work toward. It has five chapters, each dedicated to a different form of freedom, and a conclusion that describes how the five forms of freedom could each be fostered by the United States government. Each chapter is made up of vignettes that include anecdotes from Snyder’s life as well as references from the history of the United States and 20th-century Europe. While most of Snyder’s books are squarely focused on history, On Freedom also delves into philosophy. Timothy Snyder is a professor of history at Yale University and has published several other books, most notably On Tyranny (2017), which describes tyranny around the world in the past century and how the United States might be succeptible to falling into it.
