“...[I]t’s hard to love someone in power, and that goes both ways.”

Lewellen offers this admission to Violet at the end of Chapter 46, after he and Violet have a conversation about the nature of sentiment and duty. Here, Lewellen urges Violet and Xaden to find a balance between their feelings for each other and the roles they both need to play in the coming war. He acknowledges that Violet and Xaden may love each other, but he is worried that their dedication to one another will compromise their judgement. Violet is offended by Lewellen’s claims, unable to see that he is right. Earlier in their conversation, Violet tells Lewellen that she promises to keep Tyrrendor safe but that she will not do so at Xaden’s expense. Her defiant claim echoes Xaden’s previous statement from Chapter 12 that he will use “Tyrrendor to protect [Violet], not [Violet] to protect Tyrrendor.” Clearly, Violet and Xaden both see the other as their main priority. However, such a singular dedication could prove dangerous to others, setting up a tension between love and duty that will likely progress in the coming books.
