Summary: Chapters 58–62

Chapter 58

Violet and the others arrive in Draithus and are vastly outnumbered. Violet and Tairn see that Teine, Mira’s dragon, is chained, and that Theophanie is holding a knife to Mira’s throat. Theophanie demands to see Jack, and Garrick brings him just in time, suspended in the same box that held the venin at Tecarus’s estate in Iron Flame. Theophanie is pleased but tells Violet she should have never trusted her word, and she slits Mira’s throat.

Chapter 59

Brennan tries to mend Mira. However, the damage is too great, and he nearly burns out. Sloane and Dain arrive because Dain caught Sloane sneaking off and followed her. She says Aaric sent her with a package for Violet. Brennan continues to struggle to mend Mira, and Violet begs Sloane to use her siphoning abilities to give Brennan more energy. Dain volunteers to be a source since he will not have to wield in the coming fight. Sloane is distressed, afraid she will kill Dain like she killed Violet’s mother, but Dain helps her through the process. She manages to transfer enough power from Dain to Brennan, and with his help, Mira survives. Sloane and Brennan depart with Mira, and Xaden leaves with the others to try and save the civilians. Only Violet and Bodhi remain.

Chapter 60

Tairn is the only dragon strong enough to carry Mira’s unconscious dragon to safety, something he reluctantly agrees to do after Violet begs him. Shortly after he leaves, Theophanie returns to fight Violet. Bodhi tries to counter Theophanie’s signet but it does not work, and Violet realizes Theophanie is not a lightning wielder but a storm wielder—just like Violet’s mother. Violet orders Bodhi to leave but he refuses, claiming his ability to counter signets will be useful. However, his dragon Cuir grabs him and carries him away.

Violet and Theophanie fight. Violet uses the highly-explosive maorsite arrows to knock Theophanie down and injure her, but Theophanie shows Violet that wyvern are headed to the Medaro Pass where civilians are fleeing into Tyrrendor. She attempts to goad Violet into channelling, claiming it is the only way for Violet to save everyone all on her own. Violet tells Theophanie she does not have to, and surprises Theophanie by arching her neck against Theophanie’s blade.

Chapter 61

The chapter is told from Rhiannon’s point of view. Rhiannon and her dragon, Feirge, patrol along the Medaro Pass. Sawyer, Ridoc, Maren, Cat, and two other fliers are with her. Wyvern appear, and the riders and fliers under Rhiannon’s command fight to defend the civilians. She orders a shield formation because “the strength of the squad is in the whole, not the individual,” and vows to hold the pass.

Chapter 62

The narrative returns to Violet’s point of view. Theophanie’s knife scrapes against Violet’s throat, and Violet takes advantage of her temporary surprise to break Theophanie’s nose and regain control. The two women face off again, and Theophanie begins to drain the ground around Violet. She tells Violet the only way to stop oneself from being drained by venin magic is to occupy ground that has already had its magic repurposed, because it creates a barrier. She tries again to get Violet to channel by claiming the easiest way to do this is to simply drain the ground yourself. Instead, Violet races to a wyvern carcass and climbs atop it just before Theophanie’s magic reaches her. She is then lifted in the air by Sgaeyl and thrown to Tairn, who has just returned from safely delivering Teine.

Theophanie rejoins the battlefield. Violet and Tairn decide to go after her and kill as many wyvern as they can along the way. Violet wields lighting and is able to take down several, but she can see Theophanie summoning another tornado. Suddenly, Aaric and his dragon, Molvic, arrive, along with a thousand soldiers and their horses from Zehyllna. Violet and Tairn continue in the direction of Theophanie.
