Summary

Chapter 9

Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson hide, but are soon discovered and captured by Luke and his henchmen, Oreius and Agrius. They learn that Luke runs the Princess Andromeda and that it’s owned by the Titan Army. Luke tells the heroes he poisoned Thalia’s tree so that the campers will be forced to either join the Titan forces, or die once the magical barrier protecting the camp is destroyed. Annabeth accuses Luke of disgracing Thalia’s memory, but Luke says Annabeth is just as guilty because she is traveling with a Cyclops. Luke reveals that he has spies inside of Camp Half-Blood before telling Percy the gods are using him. He alludes to a prophecy that will come into play when Percy turns sixteen, but he does not offer any details. Percy tries to tell Luke that Hermes sent them, but Luke rejects his father’s interest and says he wants to destroy Olympus. He boasts that his wishes are already coming true; Kronos grows stronger with every demigod that turns to his side. He gestures at a golden sarcophagus in the center of the room and Percy realizes it contains the slowly re-forming Kronos. Orieus starts to lead Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson away, but the three manage to break free and jump into a lifeboat.

Chapter 10

Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson manage to escape in the lifeboat with the help of Hermes’s gifted winds. Once they are a safe distance from the Princess Andromeda, they send an iris message to Chiron and tell him what they’ve learned. However, the connection is poor and they can’t hear what it is that he’s trying to warn them about. Percy intuitively knows where they are in the water because of his father, and Annabeth says they should steer towards Chesapeake Bay—she has a place for them to hide. The three heroes arrive at a hideout that Annabeth, Thalia, and Luke made when they were younger. Percy sends Tyson away to look for powdered donuts so he can speak with Annabeth in private. First, they agree that Luke let them go too easily, and they worry that he wants them to do the work and find the Fleece for him. Next, Percy asks Annabeth about her aversion to Cyclopes. She is uneasy, but nonetheless begins to answer when they are interrupted by Tyson, who miraculously found some donuts in a suspiciously named Monster Donut shop. The three heroes discover that the shop is actually tied to the life force of a Hydra, a mythical beast with regenerating heads. The Hydra nearly kills them when they are suddenly rescued by Clarisse, who brings them onto her ship—the CSS Birmingham.
