Overview

Jesmyn Ward's 2017 novel Sing, Unburied, Sing moves between three troubled narrators as it explores the American South's legacy of racism and its enduring effects on the bonds of family. The story offers an unsparing view into the intergenerational trauma rooted in Mississippi’s legacy of racism, unjust incarceration, and enslavement, and spotlights themes such as the mutability of identity, the importance of memory, and the struggle to survive in a racist and violent world. Sing, Unburied, Sing is Ward’s third book, and it won the National Book Award for Fiction in 2017. In 2024, it was ranked 30th on the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century list by the New York Times.
