Overview

The Message is a 2024 nonfiction book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, based on his travels to Senegal, South Carolina, and Palestine. While reflecting on experiences from his own past, Coates describes the conflicts in each region he visits and highlights the importance of journalism that tells the stories of such struggles. Coates, who previously wrote the bestseller Between the World and Me (2015), is an activist, journalist, and the Sterling Brown Endowed Chair in the English department at Howard University.  While The Message received praise from readers and critics upon publication, the most vocal reactions it received were about comments Coates makes in the book about Israel and its treatment of its Palestinian population.
