Overview

Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” is a short story originally published in an 1846 issue of the Philadelphia women’s magazine Godey's Lady's Book. Set in an unnamed European city, likely in France or Italy during the carnival season, the story tells of how a man named Montresor bricks his former friend, Fortunato, in his family vaults in revenge for an unknown insult. Montresor narrates the tale in first person fifty years after the crime, bringing the reader into his confidence. Although largely overlooked by Poe’s American contemporaries, it first gained popularity within the late nineteenth century French literary scene.
