Is Dmitri’s wife aware that he is unfaithful to her?
The short answer is: we do not know. The slightly longer answer is that the reader does not know because Dmitri does not seem to care one way or the other, and the story is told from his point of view. However, there is a moment towards the middle of the text in which Dmitri’s wife tells him not to be a coxcomb after he begins making “vague generalizations about love and women,” implying she might be somewhat aware.
What does the mirror symbolize in “The Lady with the Dog”?
The mirror that Dmitri looks into at the end of the text symbolizes self-reflection because Dmitri stares at his own features as he assesses his internal transformation.
When and where does “The Lady with the Dog” take place?
The story takes place during the late nineteenth century in Imperial Russia.
What is the significance of Dmitri’s daughter?
Dmitri’s unnamed daughter is consistently linked with Anna. At the start of the text, Dmitri muses that it was not long since Anna was a schoolgirl like his daughter and at the end of the text, Dmitri walks his daughter to school on the way to meeting Anna at the hotel. It is possible that Chekhov linked these two characters in order to comment on the childlike innocence that was both cultivated and prized in young women.
