Overview

Philip K. Dick’s novella “The Minority Report” was originally published in 1956 in the science fiction magazine Fantastic Universe. The story depicts a future in which criminals are arrested before they can act. The police rely on the predictions of precognitive mutants who can see into the future. The novella was adapted into a film by Steven Spielberg in 2002, and in 2015 a sequel television series aired on Fox. Because of its consistently relevant and prescient themes of free will, social safety, and human rights, the novella and its adaptations have become common talking points in conversations about the future of policing.
