Why is Anderton convinced Witwer is after his job?
Anderton’s initial suspicions about Witwer appear to come from his own insecurity. The combination of seeing Witwer’s youth and knowing that Witwer will someday inherit his job makes Anderton feel the weight of his older age. However, Anderton is also able to justify his suspicions because of the balance of power in society. Witwer previously worked for the Senate, making Anderton wonder whether instead of truly transferring, Witwer is attempting to bring the police directly under the Senate’s control.
What is a minority report?
The term “minority report” comes from the way the output from the precogs is analyzed. At times, not all the precogs agree on a prediction. If two of the precogs agree on a prediction, forming a majority report, the computer will consider their prediction correct and output it. The logic here is that it is unlikely for two precogs to independently arrive at the exact same inaccurate prediction. The outlier prediction that the computer ignores is called the minority report.
How does Anderton realize that Fleming works for Kaplan?
Just before Fleming strangles Lisa, he tosses Anderton his gun. Anderton recognizes the gun as being an updated version of an Army-issued model and realizes that a member of an underground rebel group would be unlikely to have that kind of gun. After he knocks Fleming unconscious, Anderton checks his body and finds a military identification card and documents signed by Kaplan.
What does Anderton mean when he says there are three minority reports?
Upon closer inspection of the reports generated by the three precogs, none of them are exactly the same. They instead appear to be three different predictions that take place in a linear temporality, with Anderton first opting to kill Kaplan, changing his mind, and finally re-asserting his desire to kill Kaplan. The computer reads the two predictions that involve Anderton killing Kaplan as consensus, but the circumstances and details of the murders are quite different.
Why does Anderton kill Leopold Kaplan?
Anderton resolves to kill Kaplan to protect the Precrime Division from eradication by the military. If Anderton doesn’t kill Kaplan, Kaplan can gesture toward Anderton’s innocence as a sign that the Precrime Division is corrupt and imprisoning innocent men. Kaplan’s motives are not altruistic, but instead a bid for a military coup. In the wake of demilitarization, Precrime became the accepted way of maintaining order. If Precrime were abolished, the Army would retake power over policing.
