Overview

The ancient Greeks followed a custom of hospitality called xenia in which they welcomed visitors, even strangers, showering them with everything from gifts to accommodations to modes of transportation. Use this worksheet to help students dive deeper into this ancient Greek custom by identifying examples of both good and bad hospitality in The Odyssey and then comparing xenia to modern-day expectations. Pass out the worksheet after students have completed The Odyssey. Review the definition of xenia as a class before students begin work.
