Al Capone Does My Shirts is a historical YA novel by American author Gennifer Choldenko, published in 2004. The novel is set in the 1930s and follows the adventures of twelve-year-old Moose Flanagan after his family move for work reasons to the island prison of Alcatraz. Moose has an older sister, fifteen-year-old Natalie, who has autism. Because of his parents' heavy work load Moose is left to care for his sister, which means helping her improve her social skills, protecting her from the attentions of prisoners, and trying to keep her in the prestigious Esther P. Marinoff School, even if that means writing to infamous criminal Al Capone to see if he can pull strings. Unexpectedly, Al Capone seems willing to help. The novel has two sequels, Al Capone Shines My Shoes (2011) and Al Capone Does My Homework (2014). Al Capone Does My Shirts won a Newberry Honor and a California Young Reader Medal.
