Inside Out and Back Again is a children's novel told in verse written by Tanhha Lai and published in 2011. It follows a young girl-Kim Hà-as she is forced from Viet Nam to the southern United States during the Viet Nam War. The story represents the challenges inherent in trying to find one's place in a new culture, and realistically represents the frustration and pain that these challenges can cause. The story includes tragedy and loss, but ends with an optimistic outlook. Tanhha Lai had worked for fifteen years on a large and complex novel for adults when she realized that she wanted to write a much simpler story about a girls who's emotional life is as full as any adult's but who is limited in her ability to express herself. The novel received a National Book Award for young people's literature, as well as a Newbery Honor.
