Jacob Have I Loved is a children's novel written by prolific children's author Katherine Paterson and published in 1980. It follows the story of Sara Louise, one of two twin daughters of a crab fisher living on the Chesapeake Bay in the 1940s. From birth, Sara Louise lives in the shadow of her sister Caroline who was born sickly and required extra attention. As the two grow up, Caroline is always the prettier, more fortunate daughter, while Sara Louise turns to the history of her home island and the traditions of the crab men to find her place. The title takes its name from a biblical reference to the twins Jacob and Esau who were similarly divided over their family's love. Paterson's novels-including her most famous work, Bridge to Terabithia-are known for addressing difficult subjects like death or, in this instance, jealousy. The novel was awarded the Newbery Medal.
