One Crazy Summer is a children's novel and work of historical fiction by Rita Williams-Garcia. Published in 2010, this novel is the first in Williams-Garcia's Gaither Sisters series; two sequels, P.S. Be Eleven and Gone Crazy in Alabama, were published in 2013 and 2015, respectively. One Crazy Summer tells the story of sisters Delphine, Vonetta, and Fem, who spend a summer in Oakland, California as members of a day camp run by the Black Panther Party, of which their mother is a member. Though the story is a work of fiction, it takes place against the backdrop of the civil rights movement and simmering tensions that gripped the U.S. in the summer of 1968, in the aftermath of the assassination Martin Luther King, Jr. One Crazy Summer was Newbery Honor book and a National Book Award finalist, as well as the recipient of the Coretta Scott King Award and the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction.
