The Breadwinner is a children's novel by Deborah Ellis. It was published in 2000. The book describes events in the life of its protagonist, 11 year-old Parvana, an Afghani girl who must disguise herself as a boy in order to become her family's breadwinner after her father is arrested by the Taliban. Through Parvana's eyes, the novel deals with complex issues including the civil unrest in Afghanistan and the constraints of life under the Taliban, particularly for women. Though the story is a work of fiction, it is based on real-life interviews by the author with Afghani refugees at camps in Pakistan and Russia. An animated feature film adaptation of The Breadwinner is currently slated for release in 2017.
