The Sunset Limited is a play by American writer Cormac McCarthy, first produced at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago in 2006 and published in the same year. With the subtitle 'A Novel in Dramatic Form', The Sunset Limited can be considered closer to a novel than to a true play. The narrative features just two characters, named Black and White after their respective skin colours. Black is an ex-convict and an evangelical Christian. White is an atheist and a college professor. Before the action of the play begins, Black saves White from suicide by throwing himself in front of a train. The play takes place solely in Black's apartment, where Black and White debate the meaning of suffering, the existence of God, and the circumstances surrounding White's attempt at suicide. The name The Sunset Limited is taken from a passenger train that runs between New Orleans to Los Angeles. The Sunset Limited was adapted for a made-for-TV film in 2011.
