Overview

Allusions add layers of meaning to a text by referring to an idea, event, or character in literature in an indirect way. Use this worksheet to help students analyze the literary allusions found in Frankenstein. Hand out the worksheet before students begin to read and have them research each thing that is alluded to. When students come across each allusion, they should first record the quote and page number where the reference is located. After students finish reading the novel, have them return to the worksheet to complete their analysis. Use the worksheet to prompt a class discussion about how Shelley uses allusions and why Shelley might have included these allusions in her novel.
