Epilogue: The Call Out

Two brothers and Jewish immigrants, Hirshel and Yigel Koffer, have found work as employees for a local railroad. On the weekend of Pottstown's Memorial Day celebrations, they encounter Nate carrying Dodo, who cries in his uncle's arms. The two men have their instructions and bring Nate and Dodo to a Pullman Porter in Berwyn. Arriving in Berwyn, they find two men who give the brothers an envelope with cash along with an offer for free shoes from Marv Skrup. The two men, Nate, and Dodo depart on a train for Philadelphia. Hirshel and Yigel briefly wonder whether this shady affair in some way ties back to the conversation they had with local Jews about the shul's water supply.

Nate brings Dodo to South Carolina, acknowledging that he may never see Addie again and unsure if he even deserves her love. However, the narrator indicates that Addie one day returns to him. Back in Pottstown, Moshe and Isaac create a camp called "Camp Chona" for disabled children. Dodo goes on to lead a full life in South Carolina. Isaac pays for a farm that Dodo grows up on and eventually raises his own children there, sharing with them the lessons he learned from Nate and Addie. Dodo leaves behind his name, instead referring to himself as Nate Love II. In 1972, he passes away, surrounded by his loved ones, on the very same day that Hurricane Agnes sweeps through Pottstown. Dodo has lost much of his memory of his early life in Pottstown, but his memories of both Chona and Monkey Pants remain vibrant. With his final breath, he mutters “Thank you, Monkey Pants,” to the utter confusion of his family.
