Summary: Chapters 10 & 11

Chapter 10: The Skrup Shoe

Doc Roberts and Carl Boydkins are cousins, their families both tracing back to the Blessingtons, who arrived on the Mayflower. Throughout their childhoods, tension always existed between the two boys—Carl was always popular in school, while Doc was somewhat of an outcast due to his polio-induced limp. Eventually, the limp causes Doc to get special shoes made by Norman Skrupskelis. However, Doc is disdainful of the whole process, harboring prejudices and antisemitic views, believing Norman to be arrogant. When Norman's sons, Marv and Irv, take over the business, Doc refuses to return to their shop altogether.

At school, Doc notices Chona, who limps the same way he does, and he develops feelings for her, though these feelings are warped by his antisemitism. When she rejects his offer to join the debate team with him, he’s outraged that someone he considers beneath him would turn him down. After returning from medical school, he is disgusted by the town's increasing immigrant presence. Fueled by bigotry, he joins the Ku Klux Klan.

Doc is still resentful of Chona for rejecting him, and now even angrier because she writes about his involvement with the KKK to local papers. Doc is approached by Carl, who tells him about Chona housing Dodo and reveals that the state would pay Doc to examine Dodo and give the necessary doctor's note to send him to a special school. Carl also discloses that the Black man that Paper and Addie thought worked for the state was merely a driver hired by the state to poke around. Doc agrees to go see Dodo.

Chapter 11: Gone

Dodo is at the store with Chona when someone enters, causing Chona to immediately grow concerned. Dodo realizes in fear that the man who entered the store is Doc Roberts. From his hiding space, Dodo observes Chona and Doc Roberts and realizes that Chona is about to faint or have a seizure, which she has been prone to do occasionally since her illness. Chona and Doc begin to argue, and Chona collapses. As she falls to the floor and has a seizure, Doc begins to sexually assault Chona. Seeing this, Dodo leaps from his hiding place and attacks Doc, who fights back and begins to strangle Dodo. Addie walks into the store and rushes to help Chona, who is having a second seizure on the floor. Meanwhile, Doc slips out and comes back with two policemen, who begin to chase Dodo. Dodo runs from the police and escapes to the roof where he tries to leap off. However, a policeman makes a grab for Dodo, fumbling the boy's takeoff and causing Dodo to fall off the roof.
