Overview

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis is the 2016 New York Times best-selling memoir by J.D. Vance. It describes the hillbilly values and culture that Vance learned from his grandparents while growing up in the Appalachian area of Ohio. Vance examines the problems that working-class white people face while simultaneously telling the story of his own journey from a humble upbringing to the Ivy League. A movie adaptation of Hillbilly Elegy directed by Ron Howard was released 2020. The author would go on to be elected to the U.S. Senate as a Republican from Ohio in 2022. In July 2024, Donald Trump named Vance as his vice-presidential running mate, rekindling interest in Vance’s memoir. After a hotly contested election campaign, the Trump-Vance ticket prevailed on November 5, 2024.
