Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis is the 2016 New York Times best-selling memoir by J.D. Vance
. It describes the hillbilly values and culture that Vance learned from his grandparents while growing up in the Appalachian area of Ohio. Vance examines the problems that working-class white people face while simultaneously telling the story of his own journey from a humble upbringing to the Ivy League. A movie adaptation of Hillbilly Elegy directed by Ron Howard was released 2020. The author would go on to be elected to the U.S. Senate as a Republican from Ohio in 2022. In July 2024, Donald Trump named Vance as his vice-presidential running mate, rekindling interest in Vance’s memoir.
